Our Spanish Crush on Serge Castella

Every so often, I come across a designer who makes my heart beat just a little bit faster.  My response is usually to a space that manages to hit all the levels of classic and modern design mixed with edginess and timelessness rolled into one.

Spanish-CrushMy latest heartthrob is Spanish designer Serge Castella. One goes to Mr.Castella’s bio and it simply lists some of his favorite things: Jean Michel Frank, Diego Giacometti, Yves Klein, Yves St.Laurent and carrot cake. Works for me. Mr. Castella’s work is featured in this month’s issue of Milieu and while the entire home is beautiful, it is the dining room, done in shades of sublime violet, that mesmerizes me.

Crystal Power

It seems that whenever I think about some of my favorite things, rock crystals and semi-precious stones seem to be among them. For centuries, crystals have been used in jewelry making, thought to have magic charms and possess special healing powers. But the truth is, who can resist the allure of nature’s beauty especially when it is transformed into works of functional art. Some of our favorites are:

Ghoulish Chic

October is here, so it’s time to start decorating your front door with ghouls and ghosts, devils and zombies and even a pumpkin or two. But who knew that the macabre could be chic as well? Designers have been incorporating skulls, body parts, insects and spikey “things” and giving them serious glam by casting them in such things as bronze, nickel, bathing them in gold plate and dusting them with semi-precious stones. The results are objects that are anything but ghoulish. We’d say they’re devilishly stylish additions to any room!
