Downtown Modern: Los Angeles

IMG_2172

Something very groovy is happening in Downtown Los Angeles. Momentum has been building over the last decade and it’s suddenly become very hip to live, work and play downtown. The Arts District has become synonymous with cool new cafes, bars, shopping, and of course, art galleries. The Frank Gehry designed Disney Concert Hall was an announcement that L.A.’s architecture is world class.

The latest reason to visit downtown is The Broad, a museum devoted to contemporary art which opened late last year. The Broad is the most recent edition in the attempt to revitalize downtown L.A.’s sleepy Grand Avenue. And it does just that. The building itself is striking with its white honeycomb-like exterior. Inside, the building’s sleek design is the perfect foil for The Broad’s incredible collection of modern masterpieces.

On Madison presents our slideshow of favorites among The Broad’s permanent collection.

Naturally, all that fabulousness worked up an appetite so we made sure to stop at the new and highly acclaimed Otium Restaurant located right next door to The Broad. Great food with a casual, sophisticated design focus. Grab your significant other and make a downtown date ASAP.

Born Stylish: Iris Apfel

There are just certain people for whom style just comes naturally: Diana Vreeland, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Audrey Hepburn, among others, possessed the innate ability to style themselves with fashion looks that would become not only their signature looks but cement them as iconic fashion symbols as well.

Add Iris Apfel to that list. Perhaps lesser known than her more famous style compatriots, Apfel is nonetheless a grand doyenne of all things stylish. She started her career helping to create the luxury textile house, Old World Weavers, with her husband Carl. Old World Weavers went on to become synonymous in the design world with quality and luxury. Iris and Carl traveled the world as a result of their business and Iris began collecting non-Western clothing and jewelry which would form the basis for her singular look.

Apfel is an artist and her canvas is herself. She has the unique ability to craft highly layered looks from her vast collection of richly woven garments and ethnic jewelry. There is no mistaking Apfel’s look: short platinum gray hair, huge over-sized round glasses, and massive jewelry often worn in staggering amounts.

Apfel, at 94, continues to exert influence in the worlds of both high fashion and interior design. She inspires creativity and the fearlessness to mix eras, cultures and styles with utter abandon to produce something that is truly individual. We showcase the fabulous world she created in her Manhattan apartment as well as her incredibly unique sense of style and beauty in the collage below.

Lifestyles of the Rich and Fabulous!

We may not admit it, but most of us are curious about how the rich and famous live. With all that money, they must have the most fabulous homes, right? Well, not necessarily. (Donald Trump’s penthouse apartment in the building that bears his name is not exactly the paragon of good taste. )

Ellen DeGeneres however, really does have some pretty fabulous homes. The amazing thing is: she designs them herself! On Madison has perused Ellen’s new book, Home, and is hard pressed to decide which of her many homes is the most gorgeous. Celebrities tend to have gaudy taste, or worse, no taste at all. But Ms. DeGeneres, along with her spouse Portia DiRossi, have purchased and renovated 12 homes over the last decade or so that are perfectly edited mixes of rustic and chic, refined and primitive, mid-century and classic.

Here are a few images from Home that showcase her talent as a designer and her passion for home design.
