Design Profile: Jacques & Dani Ruelland

One of the great pleasures of being in the design business is discovering the work of artists that have remained a bit under-the-radar. Such is the case with the work of artists Jacques and Dani Ruelland. Both Ruelland’s had artistic training: Jacques as a painter and Dani as a sculptor. The young couple combined talents and began working with ceramics in a studio at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, setting up their own studio in 1954. They exhibited regularly in Parisian galleries until the early 1990’s.

More recently, fashion designer Raf Simons auctioned off his extensive collection of French ceramics. In December 2013 at the Piasa Rive Gauche, the auction “French Ceramics: 1945-75” (Paris, December 17, 2013) included 10 vases by Jacques & Dani Ruelland. Pre-auction estimates were between $9,500-12,000, with an actual hammer price coming down at $19,300. Said Simons, “Their vases are very romantic and powerful, perhaps because they are the work of a couple.”

With their chic and sculptural simplicity, On Madison thinks their work will not be under-the-radar for long.

Practical Glamour: The Étagère

There aren’t many pieces in a room as hard-working as an étagère. Of course, they can hold court looking tall and elegant, but an étagère also functions as the perfect place for special objet d’art, design books, photographs, small sculptures, or even decorative boxes secretly holding things you need to artfully hide (like CD’s or loose papers).

On Madison is always on the lookout for fabulous étagères and we’ve put together a montage of pieces that combine our two favorite things…glamour and function. What could be better? Whether your home is modern or more traditional, there are so many incredible styles of étagères to choose from you’re guaranteed to fall in love with the perfect one, maybe even one from our collage below!

Tea, anyone?

Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about tea. Tea is a beverage, to be sure, but it’s so much more. Serving and drinking tea can be a lovely ritual, a celebration, therapeutic and just plain delicious. Elevating tea to its highest possibilities takes a little thought, however. There’s the tea, of course, which is a matter of personal preference, although some brands just stand above the rest. Then there is the brewing method – tea bag, loose tea, cup or teapot. Finally, there is what I call “the show.” I mean, it’s about the presentation and you can literally let your fancy run wild.

On Madison has put together a veritable teatime fantasy of teapots, trays, goodies, and of course, tea, to make your next teatime something special.
