Winter Style: Inspired Fireplaces

It’s been a colder and rainier winter than many of us Angelinos are used to, though as I type this it’s a gorgeous 75 degrees outside on the first day of February.

Nevertheless, the wintery weather has inspired us. We’re pulling out the down comforters, furs, pillows, and nestling by the fireplace as many times as we can before summer swiftly approaches.

The fireplace is one of our favorite ways to add a focal point to a living space. It’s perfect for adding height and dimension to a room that needs either. Customize a fireplace with your favorite materials: brick, tile, concrete, marble, limestone. Think about an entire marble slab for drama, or a classic limestone, or maybe painted white brick for that midcentury vibe. The possibilities are endless.

On Madison has compiled an inspirational collage below where the fireplace adds not only warmth, but also an architectural quality and depth. Focusing on elegant, sophisticated neutral spaces with contrasting elements, we chose what we thought were perfect examples of what we love about the fireplace. Tip: start with a neutral palette (our favorite) and then layer on accessories, metallics, and texture to make it chic and luxurious. There’s a time and place for the Alpine cozy cabin style fireplace, but we’re focusing only on the sleek and modern.

See below for what we’re loving this winter and how you can bring the look to life in your own home:

2017 Design Trend: Navy is the new Black

Continuing with our 2017 Design Trend series, we’d like to talk NAVY BLUE. Is it the new black? If runways and interiors are any indication, blue is the hue you should be looking to add to your repertoire for 2017.

There are plenty of ways to make blue more than just a trend this season. Classic, cool, and confident, deep blue navy looks right at home on structured sofas while adding a depth and luxuriousness that black sometimes cannot achieve. Deep blue walls are an elegant way to add drama to any living area, and if you’re uncomfortable with taking the plunge, try an accent wall or even half of a wall for a modern twist.

However you style it, navy is a classic that is here to stay not just for 2017. We’d love to hear how you’re using blue in your interiors, let us know in the comments below. On Madison has compiled some inspiration eye-candy on how to work blue into your home or wardrobe. And stay tuned for more 2017 design trends coming soon on the blog as well.

Design Spotlight: Michael Taylor

Michael Taylor had a signature style. No one could mistake the oversized furniture, fossilized stone, logs, wicker, and lots of mirrors, usually against a backdrop of white or creams as anyone else’s style.

Taylor pioneered what would come to be called “The California Style”, something that would be widely emulated, a combination of rusticity and glamour. “When you take things out, you must increase the size of what’s left,” Taylor would famously say. Indeed, monumental scale would become one of the hallmarks of his work.

Born in Modesto California, Taylor was an early fan of the work of Syrie Maugham, another designer who favored the shade of white. He eventually opened his own shop on Sutter Street in San Francisco where he would create fantastic window displays utilizing furnishings of his own design combined with natural elements and objects, mostly from East Asia and the Mediterranean. Major commissions followed and he became one of the most published designers in the 1970’s and 1980’s until his death in 1986.

On Madison has put together a retrospective of some of the best of Michael Taylor’s work. We can’t think of many who have done it better.
