Neue Gallery NYC

Fortified by a wonderful lunch, we hit Madison Avenue again and walked off our meal by heading up to the Neue Gallery at 5th and 86th Streets. Housed in a Beaux Art mansion renovated by the distinguished architect Annabelle Selldorf, the Neue Gallery houses the extensive German and Austrian modern art collection of Ronald Lauder of the Estee Lauder fortune. This is a little gem of a museum.

The current exhibition features works by Vasily Kandinsky.  The highlights were four works originally commissioned for Edwin R. Campbell, the chairman of Chevrolet for his New York apartment.  The other standout was a mural re-created for the Neue Gallery that re-creates murals Kandinsky created for the 1922 Juryfreie Kunstschau (Jury-Free Art Show) which was destroyed by fire. A perfect New York afternoon.
